Calathea lutea (commonly called Havana Cigar or Cigar Calathea) is a bold tropical plant known for its large paddle-shaped green leaves with a silvery underside. In Kerala’s warm and humid climate, it grows very well outdoors in partial shade or filtered sunlight. It prefers well-drained, organic-rich soil and consistent moisture, but should not be waterlogged. Ideal temperatures range from 20–35°C, which suits Kerala perfectly. High humidity encourages lush growth, making it ideal for landscaping, borders, or as a statement foliage plant. Regular watering, occasional compost feeding, and protection from harsh afternoon sun will keep it healthy and vibrant year-round.
