Hydrangea, commonly grown varieties belonging to the genus Hydrangea, is a beautiful ornamental shrub admired for its large, globe-shaped flower clusters in shades of blue, pink, purple, and white. In Kerala’s climate, hydrangeas grow best in cooler and mildly shaded areas with temperatures between 15°C to 30°C, as excessive heat can reduce flowering. They prefer partial shade, especially protection from harsh afternoon sun, and thrive in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Slightly acidic soil encourages blue blooms, while alkaline soil produces pink flowers. Regular watering is essential to keep the soil consistently moist, but waterlogging should be avoided. In Kerala conditions, flowering is more prominent during cooler and post-monsoon seasons. With proper pruning and care, hydrangeas are ideal for pots, shaded garden beds, and ornamental landscaping.
