Nutmeg, scientifically known as Myristica fragrans, is a valuable tropical spice tree cultivated for its aromatic seed (nutmeg) and the outer covering known as mace. It thrives exceptionally well in Kerala’s warm and humid climate, growing best in temperatures between 20°C to 35°C with high humidity and well-distributed annual rainfall. Nutmeg prefers partial shade during its early growth stage and performs best in deep, fertile, well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter. Regular irrigation is essential during dry periods, while proper drainage must be maintained to prevent waterlogging and root diseases. In Kerala conditions, the tree begins bearing after a few years and produces fruits seasonally once mature. With proper mulching, balanced fertilization, and good management practices, nutmeg becomes a profitable long-term spice crop suitable for homestead gardens and commercial plantations.
